February 12: Our series continues with
STANLEY STEVENS, noted local educator and historian, who will speak about
researching local history which was his avocation during nearly thirty years (1965-1993) as Map Librarian
at the University Library, UCSC. His research, writing, and indexing local history publications continues
as his principal interest and daily activity. Stanley is an expert on the life of Frederick Augustus Hihn,
a German Immigrant who came to California during the Gold Rush. He made his way to Santa Cruz County in 1851
and was the founder of Capitola.
Porter Memorial Library is operated by volunteers and
provides services to communities in the Soquel California area. The library also features
a History Room maintained by the Soquel Pioneer
and Historical Association The room is open to anyone who wants to explore
Soquel history through displays, books and scrapbooks.
located at 3050 Porter Avenue, phone (831) 475-3326, is open to the public each
week day from noon until 4 PM and on Saturday from 10 AM until 2 PM.

In addition to having a good collection of books and providing a pleasant place to read or study, a series of talks by local authors is featured each Spring. Check our EVENTS section for details about lecture series. Keep checking here for information about our annual series.
